Right now, I'm still at a stage in my running life where new personal records (PR) a very attainable.  I wasn't a runner in high school and my college days and the first couple years after were largely sedentary.

It's well known that in cycling, to conserve energy for the long-term you need to have a high cadence.  That is, you need to turn your pedals at a high rate in a low gear.  This places the burden on your lungs, rather than your legs.  Experts say that you need to pedal as fast as possible and still maintain good form for the proper effect.

Probably the most common advice I see for first time marathoners, ultramarathoners or triathletes is, "your goal for your first race should be just to finish."  I think this is lousy advice.

Nowadays in endurance sports, cheating has become very high tech; EPO, blood transfusions, testosterone...but one British runner decided to take a page out of Rosie Ruiz's book to take third place at the Kielder Marathon on October 9 in Northumberland, England.

The Harrisburg Mile is held every July on Front Street in Harrisburg and benefits the Harrisburg YMCA.  The course isn't completely flat, but if you're used to running on roads (especially in Central Pennsylvania) you can certainly consider that mile along the Susquehanna River flat.
