Finger Lakes Fifties Post-Mortem

After getting crushed by the heat at the Finger Lakes Fifties 50K, I wanted to make sure I took some time to review the race, look at what happened and come up with solutions to better deal with the heat.

I've gone over the race several times in my head, and Tim Noakes new book, Waterlogged (iRunFar.com review here) seems to have come out at an apt time for me.  I truly believe that drinking more water was not an option for me.  My stomach was full and could only absorb so much water during the race.

After considerable thought and research, I've narrowed my problems down to four chief items:

Finger Lakes Fifties 50K Race Report

As anticipated, June 30 was a hot day in the Finger Lakes National Forest.  But I had come up with a plan to beat that heat and finish the Finger Lakes Fifties 50K strong.  Too bad it wasn't a very good plan.

The night before I set the alarm on my cell phone for 4:15 AM, so I could leave my parent's cottage on Keuka Lake before 5:00.  It proved, to be unnecessary, because when I checked the time when I woke up the next morning, it was 4:13.  I managed to get myself dressed and out the door by 4:30, which turned out to be a good thing, because just before I got to Watkins Glen, by low fuel light turned on.
